Emergency Response Training - Healthcare (General)


Course Description

The Emergency Response Training - Healthcare course covers response procedures, evacuation procedures and the skills required by staff in the event of an incident occurring in a healthcare setting. This course covers the basic knowledge that all staff working in a healthcare facility must hold not only for the organisation to meet its accreditation requirements and Work Health and Safety obligations, but also to ensure that staff are prepared to respond to emergency incidents and alarms of fire.

Course Content

This course is aimed at staff working in a healthcare environment. The course is specifically tailored to the organisation and the facilities individual risks being based on the requirements of the Australian Standard AS4083-2010 Planning for Emergencies - Healthcare Facilities.

Participants will gain the essential knowledge required to respond and effectively communicate during an emergency as a staff member working within a healthcare facility.

At the completion of this course, participants will demonstrate skills in conducting an evacuation, operating basic emergency equipment such as extinguishers and alarms, reporting and liaising with Emergency Officers within the facility.

Topics include:

  • An overview of Australian Standard AS4083
  • WHS Legislation and basic requirements in an emergency
  • The role of staff in an emergency
  • Emergency response and evacuation procedures
  • The management of persons with special needs
  • Emergency control points, their location, use and importance
  • Hazards and associated risk management, as appropriate to the facility
  • Patient removal techniques
  • First Attack Firefighting (Extinguisher use)

Course Duration

The course is delivered over a 1.5 hour period.


Delivery mode

Training is delivered face to face including both theory and practical components with a strong emphasis on the practical application of skills. The course involves the use of the First Attack Firefighting equipment installed within the facility.


Award and Recognition

Successful participants will be awarded a Statement of Training.
